Search for the Chief Executive Officer, VCU Medical Center
Virginia Commonwealth University Health System
Virginia Commonwealth University Health System is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking, innovative, and collaborative Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead VCU Health System’s flagship hospital, the VCU Medical Center (VCUMC). As VCU Health plays a vital role in providing essential tertiary and quaternary care to its population, the CEO of the system’s largest and most pivotal hospital – the institution that binds the health system together – will play a key role in meeting the goals of the health system, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the needs of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for VCU Health Sciences and Chief Executive Officer of VCU Health System, the incumbent will develop and communicate a vision that embraces and champions the Medical Center’s safety net mission. With an early-on focus on achieving operational efficiencies, improving access, and standardizing key elements involved in delivery of care, the CEO will work closely with the newly created system-based Chief Quality and Safety Officer to implement a highly proactive and results-driven care strategy. To ensure success in that endeavor, the CEO will champion and support bi-directional communication based on principles of professionalism, respect, equity, inclusion, and accountability.
The VCU Health System is an urban-based, multi-site, comprehensive academic medical center in central Virginia, and employs over 13,000 full-time and part-time doctors, nurses, and support and administrative staff. The integrated Health System includes VCUMC (which houses the NCI-designated Massey Cancer Center, the Pauley Heart Center, and the Hume-Lee Transplant Center), Children’s Hospital of Richmond, Virginia Treatment Center for Children, VCU Community Memorial Hospital, newly acquired VCU Tappahannock Hospital, as well as the 6 Health Sciences schools at VCU. VCU Health System’s footprint and impact are growing, evident in the construction of a new adult outpatient pavilion and a new children’s inpatient tower; the Medical Center CEO is joining VCU at a time when momentum is high.
VCUMC consistently has been ranked the number one hospital in the region and the state’s leading safety net hospital. The VCU Medical Center supports the state’s leading Level I trauma center, its only ACS-verified, Level I pediatric trauma center, the nation’s oldest civilian burn center, and several outstanding multidisciplinary centers. With 805 licensed beds, VCUMC has over 37,000 inpatient admissions each year, representing approximately a 21 percent share of Richmond's inpatient market.
The CEO is responsible for providing overall strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of VCUMC with the objective to ensure that the clinical services rendered align with the mission and vision of the VCU Health System. The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years senior leadership experience in operations at a large and complex hospital and at least three years of progressively responsible experience in hospital administration. A graduate degree from an accredited college or university in Health Care, Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field is required.
