Reporting to the President/CEO, the Senior Vice President/Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) is responsible for developing, executing and supporting South Shore Health’s strategic plan, processes and capabilities at the business and enterprise level, solidifying business cases for strategic initiatives, measuring and monitoring key strategic initiatives and influencing others to embrace a broader vision of the organization’s future vision with the goal of differentiating South Shore Health as a premier not for profit healthcare system in the marketplace while serving our community’s mission.
Lead the development of an overall organizational strategy by working closely with the CEO, The Board of Directors and the Executive Team to develop and execute a 3-5 year vision.
Lead the development of an annual planning process aligned with the 3-5 year strategy working closely with senior leadership and the Board of Directors with the roll out of key performance initiatives and key performance indicators.
Support South Shore Health’s mission, values, business strategy and operational processes ensuring strategic plans and goals align with organizational priorities.
Work with colleagues in critical strategic conversations that includes framing strategic questions as well as key choices and tradeoffs.
Forge strong working relationships based on trust, cooperation, confidence and mutual respect with colleagues and other executives across the system and externally with key stake holders.
Create, hire and develop a business analytics team to be utilized by CSO and other members of the team across the system.
Consistently seek to improve the relevance and quality improvement of strategic analyses and proposals.
Work in collaboration with hospital/department leaders to develop strategic service lines and associated business plans insuring physician engagement to achieve desired results in quality, service, operations and financial metrics.
Lead the planning and development as well as monitor the deployment of specific business strategies to advance the mission of the organization.
Work with Senior Leaders in developing and fostering strategic alliances with external organizations
Help implement management controls and reporting procedures to ensure that the CSO and the management team have up to date situational awareness of all core issues and operating data pertinent to sound decision making.
Support strategic retreats including an annual Board of Directors and Senior Leadership retreat.
Study internal and external trends and marketplace developments to identify new business opportunities and challenges.
Monitor near- and long-term market trends as well as emerging need/interests among key stakeholders (e.g. patients, providers, payors, vendors, new entrants, etc.) to forecast future trends and opportunities that inform strategies.
Work in concert with Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer to align our strategy with operational excellence.
Work in concert with Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer to ensure financial planning, forecasting and business planning is appropriate and aligned with the strategic plan and business objectives.
Work in concert with Senior Vice President/Marketing/Chief Development Officer to develop and implement marketing plans to promote the organization’s business initiatives.
Ensure strategies are well communicated and translated into actionable and quantitative plans for entities and departments.
Education & Experience
Master’s degree in business, healthcare administration or similar discipline is preferred.
Successful past experience managing complex change initiatives in a health-care environment required. Comfort with working in a collaborative and consensus building environment. Must be a strategic thinker that takes initiative, has the stamina, emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills to operate strategically and effectively oversee the tactics in order to help drive and achieve differentiating business results. Successful track record of innovation and business development.
12+ years’ experience, with at least 8 years in a progressive leadership role.
Strategic thinker capable of providing clear, balanced advice/counsel on a broad range of strategic and complex management, product and go to market issues.
